The new technologies have a great deal of threats but can also give many opportunities. Alternative capitalism can benefit from them. From cryptocurrency to online libraries, there are many ways to make grow a better knowledge society, and to provide alternative ways to finance projects linked to the environment or solidarity.
In our time we live the revival of a very traditional opposition between the reactionaries and the progressists. Already in the Jewish culture there was an opposition between the Talmudists Hillel and Chammaï. It was the first famous opposition between a reformist and a reactionary intellectual. Many of them will follow. Even the American political divisions, stemmed from a deeply Protestant country which is the closest Christian confession to the Jewish culture, there is this opposition which can be seen between Obama and Trump. It is the reason why, if reactionary ideas are going very well in the Western world, reformist ideas and progressist ideas in general could be able to compete partly thanks to the advent of these technologies.
There are many ideologies, all engaged in causes for the environment or solidarity, that exist. Some don’t want to use money, some others are willing to do it. In this article the second case will be mainly taken into account. To this extend a good deal of initiatives can be used to promote and make grow an alternative capitalism able to support in a large scale projects around the world promoting solidarity, education or better healthcare.
A possible initiative would be to use cryptocurrency to serve more the purposes of alternative capitalism. It would be a way to get new sources of financing apart from the traditional banking system. This idea could be useful in a time many projects in the solidarity sector are not well supported by banks or other financing institutions.
Another engagement would be to promote a more internationalized alternative capitalism. Without being Marxist the ideolog Marx was right to support an international vision of his ideas. Contrary to Hegel who wanted to stay in his country to implement his ideas, Marx decided to engaged at an international scale. Ideologies can really work if they go beyond borders, it is a reason why great figures like Luther or Marx insisted on working foreign languages.
A last initiative would be to promote more debates, a knowledge society and renewing intellectual debates inspiring from what happened in the past during many centuries. Society is declining partly because of the power of social networks… For instance opinion journalism can play a role to this extend, while the internet threatens to make disappear information journalism. Advocating the power of libraries can be also impactful as free culture is a great asset.
These ideas, among many others, can contribute at their small scale to make alternative capitalism grow. Alternative ways to promote environmental projects should be considered more as they are not seen as a priority by many Western politicians leaning more and more to the extreme right.
