The role of theatre : a movement towards subjectivism to continue

In this series of articles some literary criticism will be made. The idea is not to “judge” artwork the author of these lines would be unable to do. But it is a way to link creative world and an approach closer to the world of thinking.

Theatre is an aspect which has been too much forgotten. This kind of literature is dealing with arts, poetry and prose. There is also the art of representation which has to be put in place. This world of arts in necessary to approach to understand better the content of such an issue. Artaud in the theatre and its double, is showing the importance of these masterpieces. This gender has been thought from the antiquity and the great Greek authors : Eurydice, Sophocle and Euripide, showed their talents in writing tragedy.

This gender revived in the Renaissance and especially in the XVIIth century. It was partly from a will to equal the advances of antique civilizations. Authors like Racine in France, for instance, created with its masterpiece Berenice a way to deal with many legacies of the antiquity. He also confronted the greatness of French language with antique heritage. The forms of theatres evolved a lot as well : as in the Greek antiquity theatre were open, they became closed spaces from the time of the Renaissance. It had a lot of impact with the sounds and also the costumes which can be used.

Step by step theatre became a place where individualism became more and more acute. It looks there are common grounds with the growing subjectivist ideas in philosophy (Kant wanted to put the subjective perceptions at the center of the course, which was revolutionary at his time) or with arts (as modern art was reflecting more and more the viewpoint of the artist). This vision is a little visible with authors like Marivaux, which is, in his piece “the false confidences” put the scene in a contemporary context. But other authors were putting more modern ideologies in the center of the course. Victor Hugo put the romantic approach on the forefront symbolically into a theatre. This symbol shows to which extend this place is a symbol of classical codes.

The movement towards subjectivation is going very far at the end of this century and in the XXth century. Jean Paul Sartre, in his masterpiece Huis Clos, showed this aspect. The theme of this work, centered about the notion of alterity, was showing philosophical aspects closed to the ideology of this great intellectual, despite doubtful ethical values. But this movement will continue and original forms will be put in place, like the pieces of Paul Claudel, which is centered around questions around Christianity.

Those factors show that theatre is representative of intellectual movements that promote more and more subjectivity. This approach, for instance seen in philosophy and in the arts, is a really important approach of this vision. It is possible to say that theatre could explore this approach, and hopefully new generations of writers could give to this demeanor new realities. The great art theatre represents deserves a future that can fulfill this kind of aspirations.
