In my opinion these elections are highlighting a lot of issues. However, some subjects have to be taken into account in priority. Three of them can be noticed : the Green Pact, the question of migrations and the war in Ukraine.
The Green Pact gives a possibility to build a more sustainable Europe, with a better energy system. To this extend it looks necessary to rethink agreements many European parties agreed on, as the CETA. This free exchange treaty doesn’t need to be cancelled, but has to be reformed, as it impacts negatively many fields, except vineyards for instance. To this aspect it looks necessary to build a system which creating a more environmental friendly approach. Ursulla Van Den Leyen was talking about a social market economy. This vision looks to be a relevant one. Anyway this ambition is not only European. Joe Biden, during his mandate, built really ambitious environmental friendly programs, to encourage companies, through taxation for instance, to comply to these rules.
The question of migration is also a core issue. It looks paradoxical to see that Europe is so closed to migrations today. However, in Christian values, Jesus was always welcoming the excluded, as the Samaritans, or adulterian women. But it is necessary to balance things : it is necessary to welcome, not everyone, but yet in good conditions migrants ; but at the same time ideas like FranceAfrique have to be fought, because it is contributing indirectly to misery leading to these migrations. Countries like China exploit very well the legitimate resentment against Western countries ; to this extend it looks detrimental to rebuild relations with African countries, based on real partnership and not paternalism. Concerning migrants in France, for instance, a better policy of education has to be offered.
Last the war in Ukraine is rebalancing the international relations. The real turning point looks to be the fact the Western world doesn’t have the economical power it had before. Countries like China or India are able to furnish help making Russia able to sustain a long war. Europe is also showing, to some extend, it’s unity at the same time. But this approach has to change, as the weight of Asian countries is rising, and work on a better working union. Some years ago Manuel Valls proposed to pause the process, following Jacques Delors ideas. It may be a good idea : the priority it to make Europe work a better way. The former foreign minister Hubert Vedrine proposed also to organize high level summits between heads of states, in times of crisis or when important decisions have to be taken. It look to be a pragmatic and efficient idea.
It looks that both Europe and Russia are losing in this war, because it creates more dependency for both. For Europe the energetical dependency is huge, as the buy of schist gas is necessary today. Concerning Russia it looks obvious that China controls this country today. China has access to all raw materials, it can give in the future a real opportunity for its silk road project, and is taking a revenge on history. Whatever the result will be concerning the war in Ukraine, a major implicit turning point will be a large loss of Russian sovereignty in profit of China. Europe will have to face this major subject.
These European election show that Europe need to rethink its long term policy. At a time citizens trust less and less the benefits of Europe, it looks necessary to build a better European system, which will be able to adapt to the challenges of the future. An ambitious and humanist approach at the same time are detrimental to this aspect.
