This year may be decisive in many contexts. It is noticeable to see that Biden can be considered as too old to be able to be President of such a powerful country as the United States. Anyway the fact Trump is running for presidency with serious chance of success can create a real threat for the world order, as he want to fight NATO for instance.
In my opinion, Biden has a good summary in the fields of economics and international relations. Concerning economics the growth was going at a good rate, while unemployment was pretty low. Concerning international relations, the network of alliances Biden built were pretty efficient to counter balance the rise of China and its expansionist views. This approach is also showing that building network is in the long run more efficient than just attacking opponents “one by one”, as Trump wanted to say.
Trump had the credit to wake up the world, more than Obama did, about the dangers posed by China. However the strategy he adopts doesn’t work in the long run in my opinion. It is necessary, provided the weight of demography, to build alliances. The United States and the Western world won’t be as powerful as they used to be in the past. To this extend it is necessary to take into account this situation. And being aggressive is less efficient in the long run than focusing on economic growth, on the quality of education… All those factors are necessary to be taken into account.
Empires who focus on the military more than on their economical growth tend to decline. That is the reason why the United States, as well as the Western world, should take more into account the new situation they have to accept. Western countries are now a region of the world, but cannot pretend to give impose their opinions to the others. Trump is a symptom of a declining hyperpower who is nostalgic of his past strength. But it is a bigger priority to focus more on a better quality of education, which is dangerously declining in the US like in Europe, and to fight the abyssal amount of debt.
That is the reason why this election is a syndrome of a United States on the defensive, for whom it is difficult to accept a decline of its position in the world. However it has been a while a relative decadence has been observe. In the 2000’s, after September 11, there have two lost wars made in Afghanistan and Irak, and an important financial crisis.
It looks urgent to interrogate the model the United States is based on. It looks noticeable that the School of Chicago, which inspired neo liberalism, led to a relative decadence of the system. Inspiring from Asian country, who were the only one to keep the traditional educational system and who focused on their economical growth, is detrimental. It can have serious consequences for the future of the United States, as well as Europe.
