Building in the long run in religions

The notion of energy is detrimental in religions. Saint Paul was called the athlete of God, as he travelled around the Mediterranean sea to promote the Christian message. But this approach was not only followed by him. The importance of energy is promoted in this vision to promote faith. But it is often advocated in the name of long term goals, as many examples can show.

Religion is a way to support this long term approach. For instance, in the Bible, it is noticeable that Moses did a dialog with God. He implemented laws this way through the Levitic, which is a central book in Judaism. To the same extend the great travel of Joseph, who was sold as a slave by his brothers, and who finally became the kind of Egypt, is showing that the notion of path and travel is advocated by God. Being engaged in a long term process looks to be supported to this extend. Travelling is a way to express energy. For this reason it is a necessary step.

Concerning Islam, some of their pillars are linked to the energy. For instance preying is an important step. It looks to be a dialog with Allah, and he is descending to meet the prayer this way. To the same extend the way preying is advocated is revealing : the believer must move straight, in a direct path to Allah, with no exterior interference. Moreover more esoteric views, linked to Sufism, are telling that in preying Allah must see a mirror of Himself thanks to the way the believer is preying. Again there is another way to consider energy : the demeanor of building a path to set a dialog with the divine.

Judaism has different approaches. The Chosen people has to prepare the advent of the Messiah, while God is choosing to be discreet approaching the world. Again there is a long term process that may build the vision of the believer. The Talmud is an example of this approach : the Pharisians, who worked ot assemble in scriptures a lot of notions of faith, the Massorets, who made a huge work to make the lecture of the biblical Hebrew accessible to more people, and Talmudists like Hillel, who was advocating an open interpretation of the texts, which was revolutionary at his time, are making this approach possible to think in the long run.

In my opinion the preparation of the Messiah is not that far from the vision of Hegel in the reason in history. For Hegel there is coherence in the long run, while history looks cruel and chaotic in the short run. To the same extend Hegel built his dialect of the master and the slave to demonstrate that the slave, thanks to his numerous skills used serving the master, becomes the most powerful in the long run. In Christianity the Apocalypse is considering long run approaches ; however there is no long preparation of the advent of the Messiah like in Judaism.

Those factors show that building a path, thinking in the long run are at the heart of many religions. Calvin for instance thought that hell was on the earth, and that is was necessary to build as many things as possible while we are on this earth. That is the reason why it is seen as wisdom in many religions to build a path, and to have energy around a vision. As the Muslim proverb says, patience comes from the Clement and precipitation from the Evil.
