POLITICS, PHILOSOPHY AND ECONOMICS

The notion of men as « political animals » have been evoked by a large number of thinkers. For example Aristotle declared that « human being is a political animal » ; on the contrary Plato modelized its city as a model of fight between the body and the soul. Thomas of Aquinas, in its commentary, thought about the notion of ideal cities. Thomas More, among others, will talk as well about that notion. Those examples show that many philosophers considered, from a long period of time, the question of politics.

That is the reason why it can be interesting, in my opinion, to consider the approach of politics linked to philosophy, but as well economics. Economics is strategic in the public and private sector the same way science in human knowledge. Economics is strategical in politics because money confers often, in the long run, power. But the mastery of progress is detrimental to get that. For instance the fact capitalism developped a mobiliar way gave in the long run power to the bourgeoisie. As Paul Krugman told, globalization will create the same way a new aristocracy of intellectuals, and the different chains of value will be impated by that. As well low qualified workers of globalization will be strongly impacted by this period.

Questions like inflation or dealing with investment are as well strategic in politics. That is the reason why, for instance, Karl Marx focused a great deal on economics (and languages to ensure an international impact) on those questions. Anyway not all the political philosophers focus on this (in my opinion detrimental) aspect. Hobbes talked about the fact that men are wolves for men and delegate by contract their sovereignty to the Leviathan. But this approach looks to forget the underneath battle for economical power. That is the reason why we can say that power is in politics, but might stems in economics. Understanding economical thought (as economics is a field of philosophy) is important to master political issues. The politician Emmanuel Macron masters really well philosophy and economics, and it is an advantage when you pretend to be a high level leader in politics.

So, in my opinion, politics may look superficial if you don’t consider economical or philosophical aspects. The fact Marx got such an influence is linked to the fact he mastered underneath strategical approaches of economics and philosophy. Then linking the three subjects of politics, economics and philosophy is definitely an approach that can be, in my opinion, relevant.
