ENGAGING A DISCREET WAY

As the muslim proverb said, « patience comes from the Prudent and precipitation from Satan ». Plato, in his book The laws, stated that it was necessary to build a system that fosters the division of work. He speak about the mastery of arts. Alain Badiou, in an interview, talks about the necessity to think in the long run, as many artists waited one or two centuries before becoming famous.

But the politicians look to think more about their elections than about building the future. The initiative of Blanquer about doing small classes was relevant. However, what about some suburbs in France where laws are not applied, where teacher are mistreated, and where the social scale is blocked. From my personal experience, I would like to talk about refugees, to whom I gave French lessons during several years. They often have degrees (not recognized in France) and are often compelled to work « in the black », illegally, while they could be entrepreneurs, build value and create jobs. However, associations that give French classes often lose their budgets, while their contribution is very important for the future. This example shows the fact education is not taken into account enough. By and large, it looks teachers are mistreated and not backed by their hierarchy, while smugglers are unpunished. It’s maybe this context that, at the end, leads to a frustration making populism rise.

However, building in the long run often means building in the shadows. Chateaubriand told about the fact in old ages, « characters were strong, imagination powerful and lives mysterious and hidden ». Misfortunately, to build something positive in the long run, it looks necessary to go this way. Albert Camus is an example of engaged intellectual who was very discreet. He had an extraordinarily exemplary life, helping jewish students during the Second World war, staying close to his institutor he devoted his Nobel Price of literature. Moreover the ways of engaging positively « on the field » are huge. Descartes said « I advanced masked on the theatre of the world ». This mentality can helpful to make our ideals work better.

Leaving the shadows can be dangerous. For instance Balzac, in his book The civil servants, showed how somebody who wanted to make the system work better has been ridiculized by a caricature. Is shows that staying in the shadows can be a more efficient solution.

Quietness is often not valued in our societies. Capitalism values confident people, at least those who look this way, and it is to this extend necessary to appear extravert and sociable. However, many introvert qualities (listening…) can be very valuable in the context of work as well as in privacy. That is the reason why it is necessary to show more confidence in those aspects. That is the reason why we can say that discretion is a tool that can be successful.
